Our mission.
To cleverly combine ideas + skills to produce engaging design.
Much akin to grafting in horticulture, grafted HI represents a joining of elements and capabilities to create engaging works of art. With a touch of handcrafted skill and honest, hard work, we strive to produce unique pieces that enrich our natural, built, and even digital environments.
We’re a husband and wife team who believes that involving others in the creative process is fun, challenging, and empowering. Gathering people and bringing awesome (and let’s be honest, sometimes not so awesome) ideas to the table in effort to merge them into something fresh has always been a vital part of our lives - ever since our dating days. This value is a core principle of our business and has evolved into our main mantra:
“Connect and create”
Our heart.
We hope our designs bring warmth and inspiration into your events, spaces, and businesses. As a small business, our desire is to grow beyond self-sustaining to a point where we can donate resources to other small businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations.
We are excited for the journey!
Our tribe.
“I spent countless summer hours at my grandparents’ house watching my Grandad draw lines and write measurements down on pieces of graph paper. He meticulously gathered tools and materials - crafting, nailing, and glueing them together. Before my eyes those lines and measurements were magically transformed into tangible objects. I've been fascinated by design ever since.
At the same time, my mom was a stickler for penmanship, and she would always tell me that neat, legible handwriting was a very significant skill to have. Hence, she would make me erase and rewrite anything I penned that was illegible (this was before computers were in every household). Though at the time it was torture, I grew a deep appreciation for lettering and eventually, typography. (Thanks, Mom!)
My College years studying Environmental & Interior Design were put on hold when we started our family. As becoming a stay-at-home mom looked to be my new norm, I continued to work on designing whatever I could whenever I could. During that time, a couple of friends asked me to create hand-lettered & illustrative pieces for weddings, non-profit events, and other home goods. I created an instagram account to document and share my work, and the rest is history. I am so grateful for all the opportunities that have come since then, and am thankful to be able to do something I love every day.
When not creating, you can find me sipping on yummy milk teas, scouring the island for matcha, ube, and li hing flavored treats, or spending loads of QT with my hubby and our 3 littles.”
Meeting new people & collaborating on projects gives us so much joy! If you have any fun ideas (or if you want to tell us about an amazing milk tea shop out there), let us know - We would absolutely LOVE to connect!
“After completing my Bachelors Degree in Food Science & Human Nutrition, and having worked several jobs in that field, I felt called to something more. I had dreams and visions, and I had to learn how to create plans to carry them out. So I returned to school for business. Along the way, I met Darrah, and suddenly put everything aside so I could pursue her 😉 We got hitched and began our little family.
Growing into our marriage, I learned that creative design was life-giving for Darrah. We teamed up, and started to dream and envision what could and should be.
While continuing further into the sphere of business and entrepreneurship, I surprisingly found myself enjoying the entire process! Developing systems, creating organizational flows, and executing ideas energize me. They fill me with purpose and allow me to support the creative endeavors of my family as well as the community.
The desire to continually grow in the vast world of business has led me to the finance and real estate industry. I am currently a Mortgage Loan Originator at Ohana Mortgage Solutions, helping Hawaii families take that step into home ownership. I take joy in utilizing my skill sets in hybrid environments to make things happen. So I look forward to seeing what creative ideas will arise from Grafted HI.
When systems, number crunching, and vision-casting aren’t on my mind, you can find me reading food labels and ingredient lists, planning for our next meal, drinking a strong bold coffee - French pressed or cold brewed; all while defending myself in the middle of a nerf battle with my 3 kiddos.”
